Discussion:
Dealing with addiction in a loved on can be testing. It easily tests every nerve and ever resolve that you have. Often it leaves us feeling drained and we feel like we just can't keep going on. Sometimes it can leave you with despair. Many times during my own husband's addiction I felt like acting out. I felt the physical pull to be childish to act in anger, in selfishness, in sin. Sometimes I even considered turning to means of numbing the pain..."I deserve a drink" type of thinking. But always I felt God was keeping me blameless. I was my own responsibility. The other night I was watching an interview with the late Whitney Houston and Oprah. I heard through all of her words, she never once really accepted responsibility of her own actions, she blamed Bobby for her drug use as if he was removed from the situation everything would be better and the truth is WE are responsible for US. We are the only ones who can keep ourselves blameless and clear minded. I feel so sorry for Whitney because I have a deep and profound respect for her talent and who she was but keeping ourselves clear of addiction in the face of such difficult and trying times is essential for us to be able to support a loved one. I'm NOT saying that having a glass of wine is wrong either or anything done in moderation, but addictions take many forms and any time we seek something other than GOD for comfort and to distract us from the pain opens us up for addiction. Getting proper godly support for ourselves to brace us for the tumultuous effects of addiction is crucial in keeping ourselves ready to receive God's grace.
Lord give me the strength to endure this. I remain blameless for You.
Meditation:
Consider carefully if you are suffering from an addiction as a response to your loved one's addiction. Are you turning to something to help you avoid painful emotions? Is there anything that you are dealing with in your life that you may need help dealing with? Overeating, internet time, shopping, compulsive reading of anything other than the bible, sex these are often addictions that mask themselves. Work on overcoming your own addictions and give it up to God, seek professional help if you feel it is out of control.
